چکیده

Climate change is enhancing the frequency of cyanobacterial blooms not only during summer but also in spring and autumn, leading to increased ecological impacts. The bacterioplankton community composition (BCC), particular, deeply affected by these blooms, although at same time BCC can play important roles blooms’ dynamics. However, more information still needed regarding species-specific blooms. goal this study was assess succession a hypereutrophic shallow lake (Vela Lake, Portugal) warm using metagenomic approach provide glimpse changes communities experience dominance Aphanizomenon-like bloom-forming species. shifts were studied 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding multivariate analyses. A total 875 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) retrieved from samples. In early spring, dominant taxa belonged Proteobacteria (mainly Alphaproteobacteria—Rickettsiales) Bacteroidetes (Saprospirales, Flavobacteriales Sphingobacteriales). end May, bloom co-dominated populations Aphanizomenon gracile, Sphaerospermopsis aphanizomenoides Synechococcus sp. developed persisted until spring. This led major shift favouring prevalence Alphaproteobacteria (Rickettsiales Rhizobiales, Caulobacteriales Rhodospirillales) followed These results contribute knowledge dynamics showing that strongly (directly or indirectly) Aphanizomenon-Sphaerospermopsis

Molecular characterization of bloom- forming Aphanizomenon strains isolated from Vela Lake (Western Central Portugal)

The diversity within the genus Aphanizomenon (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria) is still controversial and more studies are needed to clarify its heterogeneity. Aphanizomenon strains isolated from the eutrophic shallow Vela Lake (Centralwestern Portugal) during bloom formation in summer months from 2001 to 2007 were characterized combining phenotypic and molecular approaches. The molecular affiliation...

Gross photosynthesis and lake community metabolism during the spring phytoplankton bloom

Daily productivity determinations of linear photosynthetic electron transfer and of net and gross inorganic CO2 uptake were determined in situ throughout a 6-week sampling period of the spring phytoplankton bloom in Esthwaite Water in the English Lake District. Photosynthetic electron transfer rates, expressed as gross O2 evolution, were determined from fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorometry an...

Aphanizomenon gracile (Nostocales), a cylindrospermopsin-producing cyanobacterium in Polish lakes

The cyanobacterial cytotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN) has become increasingly common in fresh waters worldwide. It was originally isolated from Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii in Australia; however, in European waters, its occurrence is associated with other cyanobacterial species belonging to the genera Aphanizomenon and Anabaena. Moreover, cylindrospermopsin-producing strains of widely distrib...

Bacterioplankton community shifts in an arctic lake correlate with seasonal changes in organic matter source.

Seasonal shifts in bacterioplankton community composition in Toolik Lake, a tundra lake on the North Slope of Alaska, were related to shifts in the source (terrestrial versus phytoplankton) and lability of dissolved organic matter (DOM). A shift in community composition, measured by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA genes, occurred at 4 degrees C in near-surface waters ...

The altered ecology of Lake Christina: a record of regime shifts, land-use change, and management from a temperate shallow lake.

We collected two sediment cores and modern submerged aquatic plants and phytoplankton from two sub-basins of Lake Christina, a large shallow lake in west-central Minnesota, and used stable isotopic and elemental proxies from sedimentary organic matter to explore questions about the pre- and post-settlement ecology of the lake. The two morphologically distinct sub-basins vary in their sensitivit...
